INSTALLING ABC FUN KEYS
Before using ABC Fun Keys, the program must be installed on
either a blank floppy diskette or a hard disk. A hard disk is
recommended if one is available since it will make ABC's pictures
appear on screen more quickly. Installation is necessary because
the ABC Fun Key files have been compressed so the entire program
can fit onto one diskette.
1. To install to a floppy disk, you will need a formatted,
floppy diskette with at least 360 KBytes free. See the
FORMAT command in your DOS manual to prepare a formatted
floppy diskette. If you are installing ABC Fun Keys to a
hard disk, skip this step.
2. Please make a backup copy of the ABC Fun Keys distribution
diskette to safeguard the program in case of an accident.
Refer to the DISKCOPY command in your DOS manual for
additional information.
3. Place the ABC distribution diskette copy in the floppy disk
drive. Type "A: [Enter]" to select that drive. Do not type
the quotation marks used in these instructions.
4. Start the installation program by typing: INSTALL [Enter]
5. Follow the instructions provided by the installation
program. The default choices are usually acceptable and can
be selected just by pressing "Enter".
6. The installation program will prompt you for the source
drive. This is the drive that contains the distribution
diskette and is usually "A:". It is necessary to include
the colon after the drive letter. Next, you will be asked
whether you want to install to a hard disk, or a floppy
disk. A hard disk installation is recommended if it is
available in order to enhance the speed of ABC's picture
displays. Type "HARD" or "FLOPPY" in response. Finally,
you will need to enter the target drive and directory.
Again, the default selection generally should be accepted by
pressing "Enter". If you only have one floppy disk drive
and no hard disk, see the footnote at the end of these
instructions for additional information.
7. In addition to copying and decompressing the ABC picture
files, the integrated installation program will guide you
through the selection of important configuration choices and
allow you to view and print the ABC Fun Keys documentation.
8. After the installation is completed, switch to the target
drive and directory. For example, if you accepted the
default installation for a hard disk, you should type:
C: [Enter]
CD \ABC [Enter]
9. Start the ABC Fun Keys program by typing: ABC [Enter]
10. Enjoy ABC Fun Keys and have fun while helping a child learn!

Additional Instructions for Users with a Single Floppy Drive:
If you are installing to a floppy diskette and only have a
single floppy, you must enter "A:" for the source and "B:"
for the destination. You will be prompted to switch source
and destination diskettes at the proper times by the
computer. Unfortunately, a great many diskette swaps will
be required. You may also need to insert your DOS boot
diskette with COMMAND.COM.
If you have some familiarity with DOS commands, it will be
much faster to create a 360K RAM disk on your computer with
a program like VDISK.SYS or RAMDRIVE.SYS which come with
many copies of DOS. Install ABC Fun Keys to the RAM disk
and then copy the resulting files to a blank floppy diskette
to generate a working copy of the program. When installing
to the RAM disk, use the install program's "FLOPPY"
selection and choose C: as the destination. (Assuming that
C: is the drive letter designation for the RAM disk.) Do
NOT attempt to print or view the documentation or the RAM
disk will run out of space. After copying all the program
files to the working diskette, delete all the files on the
RAM disk except ABC.EXE. Then, run INSTALL again and select
"Review/Print documentation". Copy the resulting
documentation files to a second blank diskette.
